The old school has closed. What happens next?

The old Gartcosh Primary School closed on 9 October 2026 after the school moved to its new home in the Community Hub. Gartcosh Development Trust has applied to North Lanarkshire Council to bring the old school and Community Hall into community ownership through a Community Asset Transfer.

Our proposed Gartcosh Links Centre would give the village a place for people of different ages to meet and take part. The plans include a community café, activities for children and young people, and space for health and wellbeing services. These are proposals: the transfer has not been agreed and the buildings are not yet owned by the Trust.

Where the application stands

We submitted the application for both buildings on 8 September 2026. The Council confirmed it had received the documents and is reviewing the application. The Trust has responded to questions raised during the Council's initial checks. We are awaiting the next step and have not been given a decision date.

We will share a confirmed decision or other significant milestone when we have one.

What the community told us

In autumn 2025, 180 residents took part in our survey. Among those who responded, 93% said they were likely to use a new community space and 72% said community ownership was very important. People asked for activities for children and young people, a community café, evening and weekend opening, and space for health and wellbeing.

That feedback helped shape our proposal. It does not guarantee that every suggested facility can be delivered. The application, funding and plans still need to progress.
