School & Community Hall — Community Asset Transfer

The opportunity

When Gartcosh Primary School moves to the new Community Hub, the current school building and the Community Hall are scheduled to close in 2026. Gartcosh Development Trust is applying under the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act to take on both buildings through a Community Asset Transfer.

Our goal is to keep these buildings at the heart of the village — preserving them for community use and creating an all-ages hub with the facilities residents have asked for.

You've already told us what you want

In autumn 2025, 180 residents took part in our community survey. The results give us a clear mandate:

• 93% are likely to use the new community space once developed
• 72% say community ownership is "very important"
• 86% rate health and wellbeing services (GP services, optician, pop-up clinics) as important or very important
• Top asks: activities for children and young people, a community café, weekend and evening opening, fitness space and better information about what's on

Gartcosh currently has no GP surgery, no dentist, no everyday café and very limited indoor community space. Without community action, these buildings could be lost permanently.

What we need to do next

To submit a strong application, we must commission a feasibility study and business plan. Our funders require the community to raise a share of the cost locally — every contribution shows funders that Gartcosh stands behind this.
