Gartcosh Local Place Plan Registered with North Lanarkshire Council
Gartcosh Development Trust is delighted to announce that our Local Place Plan has been completed and formally registered with North Lanarkshire Council.
This is a significant milestone for our village. The Gartcosh Local Place Plan is the first of its kind for our community - a document that sets out a spatial vision for how Gartcosh could be improved and the actions needed to achieve this.
A community-led plan
The Local Place Plan is the result of extensive consultation and engagement with residents throughout 2024 and 2025. Using the Place Standard assessment tool and the CRT Place engagement toolkit, we gathered views from across the community about Gartcosh as it is now and how people want to see it develop in the future.
The Plan addresses five key themes from the Improvement Service's Place and Wellbeing Outcomes framework: movement, spaces, resources, civic participation, and stewardship. It identifies community action priorities and proposals that aim to improve wellbeing, reduce inequality, and work toward Net Zero.
Why this matters
Gartcosh has been part of a Community Growth Area since around 2012. Our population has grown substantially from under 2,000 residents, yet concerns remain about infrastructure, amenities, and the sustainability of our community. The Local Place Plan gives residents a formal voice in the planning system—a way to ensure that future development respects our village's identity while meeting local needs.

We're grateful to everyone who took part in the consultation workshops and surveys. Special thanks also to Coalfields Regeneration Trust who played a huge part in producing this document.
What happens next?
North Lanarkshire Council has validated and registered the Place Plan, and added it to their Register of Local Place Plans. It will now have formal weight in future planning decisions affecting our area.
